Ashanti Asante Maternity Early 20th Century Fertility Wood Figure African Ghana. Gorgeous First Quarter of 20th Century African Ashanti Asante Maternity Early 20th Century Fertility Carved Wood Figure African Ghana. This is a beautifully carved Early 20th Century Ashanti Maternity figure with almond-shaped eyes, small mouth and elaborate hairstyle, seated on a traditional stool with geometric carvings visible on the back.

Figure is nude except for a carved band around neck as well as a bronze chain necklace. Seated on her lap is a small nude child who is suckling on female's protruding bullet-shaped breasts.

Child's hands are raised to hold up the breast into it's mouth. Both figures have ample traces of white pigment, possibly kaolin, overall. 14 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches. Weight: 1 lb 7 oz. Gorgeous aged patina, kaolin patina. Minor scuffs, cracks and losses commensurate with age and use. All items for sale are vintage or antique and it may show evidence of wear.
