EARLY 20TH CENTURY ANTIQUE ARTS & CRAFTS OAK STACKING FILE CABINET BY SHAW WALKER OF MUSKEGON MICHIGAN. Bay colony antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic early 20th century antique arts and crafts oak stacking file cabinet by the Shaw Walker company of Muskegon Michigan. The company was founded during the final years of the 19th century with a partnership between Mr. Arch W Shaw & Mr. Similar to the Amberg company, Shaw Walker began as a stationery company with a patented filing system for organizing office papers.

The cabinet consists of 4 components, one top (500-G), two letter size file drawers (504-H), and a straight leg base (501-C). The drawer slides are also stamped with a patent date of December 24 1907. These files that can break down into separate components are especially nice if you live in a spatially restrictive city like Boston, DC, or New York, or if you live above ground level or in an older home with a tricky staircase. The file sections have paneled sides, and the cabinet retains all of its original hardware aside from one of the three connecting rods.

The original brass pulls, index card plates, & file rods monogrammed with the company's SW hallmark are all present and recently polished to a high sheen by the previous owners. The very top has been refinished, but there's no obvious evidence of a refinishing elsewhere on the cabinet.

It looks like a previous owner might have applied a clear shellac over the original surface. The black discoloration at the bottom of the legs is from years of repeated exposure to ammonia cleaning products whenever somebody mopped the floors of wherever this spent the majority of its life. The interior the drawers measures 12" wide x 17 1/4" deep x 10 3/4" tall which can hold standard letter size printer papers (11" x 8 1/2). The cabinet measures 15 3/4" wide x 19" deep (20 1/2" including pull) x 33" tall.
